This course examines the Bible as a collection of literature in a variety of genres ranging from tragic to comic and from didactic to poetic. Students read and discuss excerpts from Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel I and II, Job, and the story of Jonah as well as selections from the Christian Bible. Course readings also include classic and modern stories, poems, and plays related to the Bible. Students write commentaries, analytical essays, and original compositions related to the Bible. Students also prepare oral presentations on biblical books not studied in class and collect references to the Bible from popular culture.
