Introductions to K-12 Curriculum Guides

   Introduction to K-12 Curriculum Guides

Research on learning suggests that, in addition to effective teaching strategies, high student achievement requires:

  • Curriculum and instruction that is focused on standards.
  • Assessments aligned to monitor student progress, and curriculum that is coordinated/articulated within and between grade levels.
  • Support for culturally relevant student learning and effective instruction.

Teachers and administrators from all grade levels and schools in our districts have collaborated on the development of documents that guide curriculum, instruction, and the assessment of student learning in our schools. The K-12 curriculum guides identify standards and establish expectations for instruction. The guides establish a course of study that is consistent across grade levels from school to school (horizontal alignment) as well as sequential as students move from one grade level to the next (vertical alignment) from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

A "living" curriculum is one that creates consistent experiences/outcomes for students focused on high status knowledge and skills. In the Amherst, Pelham, and Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools, we are committed to supporting a collegial process for the review and refinement of curriculum. In order to sustain a coherent curriculum/course of studies, yet respond to new research and best practices, we encourage and support on-going, collaborative curriculum development. Each year, curriculum maps may be revised through this collaborative process.Once new and/or revised curricula (or courses) meet administrative approval, they are incorporated into the appropriate curriculum guide.

By placing these curriculum guides on our district website, we invite teachers, parents, and others to view our curriculum. We encourage discourse about what we teach and why. We welcome constructive comments and hope these guides stimulate discourse about teaching and learning and about high expectations for achievement for all of our students.
