Policy AAA: Amherst School District Legal Status

  The legal basis for public education in the town is vested in the willof the people as expressed in the Constitution of Massachusetts andstate statutes pertaining to education.

Under the General Laws of Massachusetts,

"…Every town shall maintain…a sufficient number of schools for theinstruction of all children who may legally attend a public schooltherein."

The public educational system for students in kindergarten throughgrade six of Amherst structurally is a department of the town operatedunder laws pertaining to education and under regulations of theMassachusetts Board of Education. The area served by the Amherst PublicSchools in coterminous with the Town of Amherst.
