Policy ECAA: Use of Cameras for Safety and Security

The School Committee authorizes the use of video cameras on districtproperty to ensure the health, welfare and safety of all students, staffand visitors on district property, and to safeguard district facilitiesand equipment. Video cameras may be used in exterior locations asdeemed appropriate by the principal in consultation with thesuperintendent.

The district will notify staff and students through student/parent andstaff handbooks that video surveillance may occur on district property.

Students or staff identified on surveillance cameras in violation ofSchool Committee policies will be subject to appropriate disciplinaryaction. Violations of the law will be referred to law enforcementagencies.

The School Committee will be notified prior to the installation ofsecurity cameras on school grounds and told of the need and placement ofsuch cameras.

Video recordings may or may not be used as a basis for student or employee disciplinary action.

The Superintendent will develop regulations and procedures for the useof video recordings for disciplinary action, for who has viewing rightsto the video recordings, and for the retention and erasure of videorecordings.
