Policy JEA: Compulsory Attendance Age

Massachusetts law establishes the Board of Education as the agentthat determines mandatory and permissible school attendance ages, withexceptions listed in law. Generally, the Board requires that allchildren be enrolled in school beginning in September of the calendaryear in which they attain the age of six and that they attend schoolregularly until they reach age 16.

Under law, each School Committee must enforce the school attendanceof all children of compulsory school age residing in the town.
