About the Opening Windows on the Past Project: This website is the product of a year-long collaboration among the Amherst, Massachusetts Elementary School system, the Center for Computer-Based Instructional Technology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, the Amherst History Museum, and the Special Collections at the Jones Library, Amherst. Funded by a state Department of Education grant, the technology coordinators at four elementary schools worked with curriculum and technology specialists at CCBIT to bring history to the students. Each class chose a different historic building to investigate, visited the Amherst History Museum to learn about the town's past, and used primary documents supplied by the Jones Library Special Collections. After completing their research, students learned a web-authoring program and created the websites listed above.
