On April 28, 1977 a fire started in the Dickinson Baggs Tavern while a bunch of college students from UMASS were living in it. They had rented the house from a former student from UMASS.
Michael Gallagher, a teacher from Fort River School, next-door said, black smoke was rushing out of the chimneys. Another person called the fire department.
Roxane Olevsky, a piano teacher, saw the fire too. Some of her best friends lived at the Baggs Tavern. Roxane said that she spent a lot of her time at the tavern.
No one was hurt, but 8 people were left homeless. The house was fifty percent damaged. It’s a mystery how the fire started.
About 4 years later it became the law offices of Monsein, Monsein and MacConnell, and still is today.
