The Underground Railroad and the Baggs Tavern

     There is a legend that says that the Dickinson Baggs Tavern is part of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad started in the mid 1800's. It was used to bring slaves to a place where they could be free. The Underground Railroad freed somewhere between 40,000 slaves to 100,000 slaves. It wasn't a railroad with a train. It was where slaves go from house to house heading north to freedom. The slaves followed the Big Dipper. They hid in bushes and trees so their owners wouldn't find them!

No one is sure if the Dickinson Baggs Tavern was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
