The Grist Mill was built in 1748 in sections. "The lowest floor of the mill is constructed of fieldstone, some of which is four feet square and a foot deep, which was placed by manual labor. On these were placed hand hewn beams which range down from 20 by 20 inches in size. Beam joints are mortised and hand planed, and large wooden pegs hold beam joints and planking together. All joists are sawmill cut (possibly sawn at a mill which is known to have existed north of the river.) Ceilings in the dining area are formed by sloping base of storage bins in the third floor from which grain was fed down chutes into containers or bags and sold to neighboring farmers."
