Beginning in 1918 Ma Goodwin ran the Colonial Inn, which was located on Pleasant Street, right across from the Newman Center. A boarding house and restaurant, this establishment served countless meals to students at Massachusetts State College (now called UMass). When she first started the business her employees were her sons and daughters, all helping with the waiting and cooking. Later she hired students.
