New Rules
Many people were becoming restless because of the new taxes and poor economic conditions mostly occurring in rural lands in the years from 1786 - 1787. They were also rallying against the polling taxes and the new law that people of lower class, such as farmers, could not vote. Other people were rebelling against the judgments for debt that the courts were making. Other reasons were high taxes, economic depression, and bad harvests. These things threatened farmers who eventually lost their farms because of high debt. Many people took up arms from New Hampshire to South Carolina, but most of Shays’ Rebellion started in Massachusetts.
