Springfield Armory
One of the targets of Shays forces was the Springfield Armory. Daniel Shays led 1100 men east along Boston Road. It was guarded by the force of 1200 militia men and was commanded by William Shepard. After several warning shots, Shepard ordered a cannon to be fired into the ranks of the Shaysites. Shays men then fled toward Ludlow and Chicopee leaving four dead men and twenty wounded. The brick building measuring twenty-one by eighty-three feet, had been erected by the Continental Congress in 1782, and stood on the north side of the Boston road on land that later became the Federal Square section of the Springfield Armory. The structure was demolished in 1842.
