Susan Dickinson was born in Deerfield, in1830. Susan's family consisted of a mother Harriet, a father Thomas, and six brothers and sisters. By the time she was 11 Susan and her siblings were orphaned. Susan left Deerfield to live with her aunt Sophia Arms Van Vranken in Geneva, New York. Susan's hobbies were reading and writing, in fact later on in her life Susan published several stories in the Springfield Republican including :
" A Hole in a Haute Society" \ "The Passing of Zoroaster" "The Circus Eighty Years Ago." "The Case of the Brannigans" |
Susan Susan and Austin were introduced in 1855 by their friend Lucy Hews, and then were married one years later in 1856. Austin and Susan lived at the Evergreens residence until Austin's death in 1895. Austin and Susan had three children together: Martha, Edward, and Gib. When Emily Dickinson ( Susan's sister in-law) became an accomplished writer, Susan was supposedly Emily's editor. Evidently many poems that Emily wrote were never published because Susan did not see fit. Susan went to Rome, Italy in the year 1899. She explored the famous sights like the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Coliseum. She liked it there very much. Susan was an honored and loved member of society and many mourned when she died in 1913. (Click here to read her obituary.) Although she has been dead for almost 90 years, many still remember and honor her.
