Emily's Connection to the Evergreens
Emily Dickinson's house is next to Austin Dickinson's house on Main Street. Emily Dickinson and Susan Gilbert Dickinson had a friendship before Sue married Austin Dickinson. The Evergreens was built by Emily Dickinson's father, Edward Dickinson, for Austin and Sue when they got married. Emily composed a poem as a wedding present for Sue. Emily and Sue exchanged notes and kept in touch. Emily used to call Sue ''Sister Sue''. Both families shared a barn called ''The Great Barn''.
