Gib’s Death
Thomas Gilbert Dickinson, also know as Gilbert or "Gib" lived for a short 8 years, but was well loved by his Aunt Emily Dickinson, the now famous poet. Gib died due to typhoid fever which he got at a swimming hole on September 27, 1883. He went swimming with his friend Kendall Emerson. Amazingly enough his friend did not get sick.
Gib died in a first floor bedroom known as "The Dying Room." The night he died, Emily Dickinson broke her 15 years of isolation to come and see him. He was her favorite nephew. Gib’s death affected Emily mentally and physically.
