Austin Dickinson Susan Dickinson |
When the beautiful Villa style house was built for Austin and Susan Dickinson, no one suspected that it would become a historical part of Amherst. The white & green landmark was built for Austin by his father Edward Dickinson in the mid 1800’s. |
| The Dickinsons then had three children, Martha, Ned and Gilbert. Gilbert sadly died and Martha (the oldest child) took possession of the house after the death of Austin & Susan. Martha Gilbert Dickinson Blanchi lived there until death and left the house to her secretary Alfred Landis Hampton who died in 1952 and left the house to his wife Mary Hampton. Mary lived there until her death on January 5, 1988 at age 93. | ![]() |

In Mary’s will she wanted the house’s belongings to be left to charity and the house itself to be knocked down. Fortunately The Evergreens destruction was talked about in court and was decided not to be knocked down. It will become a museum opening in 2002. The house's upstairs bedrooms are not expected to open for about 4 years. |
