1923

The Women’s Club was given the Hills House as a bequest from Alice M. Hills in 1923. A meeting was held on May 22 and the club voted to accept the gifts of Mrs. Hills. She also left an endowment of ten thousand dollars to be used for maintenance of the house as a memorial to the Hills family. After the death of the last of the beneficiary, the fund was divided equally among  the Amherst Women’s Club, The Home for the Aged, and the Holyoke Hospital.

When the Women’s Club gained possession of the house they had many questions, such as what shall we do with the property? And how can we maintain it? Yet, the club was grateful to have such a large house in which they could hold activities easier.   In the fall a committee of six (the house committee) was elected and began to make plans for opening the house before the close of the club year.
