Alice Maud Thompson Hills

Alice was a very vigorous woman who loved to entertain. When her husband L. Dwight was alive, their house was the center of social activity and became very popular. They had horses and carriages to take L. Dwight around town and Alice to her social gatherings.  Alice and her husband traveled every now and then. They spent some winters in New York, but mostly spent their summers in Amherst. Before her marriage, Alice had been a nurse but stopped to be with L. Dwight. After his death in 1917, however, she felt she could help as a nurse overseas while World War I was going on, so she went. After returning, she traveled a lot. After coming back from one of her trips in 1922 she died very unexpectedly.

Before her death, Alice gave the Hills House to the Amherst Woman's Club, along with $10,000. Click here to see a copy of Alice's will.
