- Allen Cox and Mr. Putnam were the men
responsible for the architectural design of the Jones Library in downtown
Amherst.
- Putnam and Cox were well known for
architectural designing in Amherst, having laid out the design for the Lord
Jeffery Inn, and many other buildings on Amherst College campus.
- The reason they built the Jones library was
because of the size of their past library, which was only the size of a
large room.
- What is it that made them
choose the design
they did for the Jones Library? The reason that Putnam and Cox made the
design that they did was because of the fact that they wanted it to feel
"homey" and not scare people away with a large, strange building.
Another reason they built the Jones the way they did was because they wanted
it to feel like "Mother Amherst inviting you into her living
room," both homey and inviting!
