Levi Stockbridge lived in the Stockbridge House from 1867 to 1892. The Massachusetts Agricultural College (now called The University of Massachusetts) owned it in fact and Mr. Stockbridge was never the owner of this home. The college purchased the home in 1864. In 1866 Levi Stockbridge was elected as the first farm superintendent and instructor of agriculture at the College. Then in 1864 Mr. Stockbridge moved into the house from his home in North Hadley. Mr. Stockbridge was president of the college from 1876-1877. For fifteen years Stockbridge was a teacher and an administrator at the college until 1892 when he moved to Lessey Street in Amherst.
This is a letter to Fred L. Stone from Levi Stockbridge written in 1889.
Here is a transcript of the letter:
Saturday Morning
Fred L. Stone Esq.
Assuming that you will be up here this P.M. to be congratulated on having reached the dignity of Grandpa. I wish you would bring ten cents worth of fine-cut with which we may celebrate.
Yours,
L. Stockbridge
