Some Other Owners (Besides Levi Stockbridge)

by: Ola and Forrester

Samuel Boltwood was the builder of the house. He built it for Hannah Alexander (who was related to Nathan Alexander of Northampton), who was his wife. Samuel Boltwood and his wife were the first people to live in the house. Their daughter and son-in-law named John Field and Abigail Boltwood lived in the house next. After John Field moved to Brattleboro, Elijah Hastings moved in with his wife Jerusha and they had four children. When Jerusha died he married another woman Rebekah.  Neherniah Strong, Levi Cowls, and Chester Cowls were other owners of the Stockbridge house to.

If you come tour the Stockbridge house you will see spilt paint on the floor! This is because one of the former owners took very bad care of this house. He also closed up all of the fireplaces. Later, it was a UMass office. In the 1930's, the president of UMass lived there (also know as Daniel Chester French) with his family. He  decided to fix it up a bit. After it was cleaned up he decided to live there.
