Assistive Technology in Amherst

The mission of the Assistive Technology Team is to facilitate the education of all students in Amherst through the use of the assistive technology devices and services needed to access the curriculum and demonstrate learning. We strive to provide the training, support and consultation necessary to enable students with diverse learning needs to maximize success in academic and personal development.

The Amherst Assistive Technology Center, located at Wildwood Elementary School, was established in 2000 from three Department of Education grants.  The Center serves as a place for teachers to modify materials and curriculum, for trial use of software and hardware with students, and houses a loaning library for the district and community.

The Individual's with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA ‘97) states that all children having exceptional needs must be considered for assistive technology. Each school district is responsible for determining what assistive technology would be appropriate for the child to receive a free and appropriate education (FAPE).  At IEP or 504 meetings, team members must consider assistive technology for each student.
