Not offered in 2008-2009PREREQUISITE: A GRADE OF C+ OR BETTER IN COMPUTER NETWORKING I.
Computer Networking I is based on the Cisco Networking Academy Program. It is a comprehensive program designed to teach students basic Internet technology skills through a curriculum that is developed by industry educators and professionals. It is sponsored by Cisco Systems and is accessible online. Students receive a password to access their account for reading assignments, lab documentation, multimedia illustrations, and chapter examinations. Level one of the course is geared toward establishing an in-depth understanding of Open Systems Interconnection (OSI Reference Model). Students explore the historical growth of computer networking and the Internet. Lab work reinforces student knowledge about the concepts of bandwidth, network topology, physical media, and network devices. Studies include protocols, encapsulation methodologies, and design factors relating to each of the seven layers of the OSI Reference Model. Students experiment by designing and implementing computer networks, and then analyze network traffic properties for a Local Area Network (LAN). There is a significant volume of tenth-grade level reading homework for this class.
