Not offered in 2008-2009 NOTE: THIS FULL-YEAR, FOUR-TRIMESTER COURSE SATISFIES THE SOPHOMORE REQUIREMENTS OF ORAL COMMUNICATION, LITERATURE AS SOCIAL CRITICISM, AND UNITED STATES HISTORY. STUDENTS MAY COMPLETE AN HONORS PORTFOLIO FOR THE ENGLISH PORTION OF THE COURSE. PRE-REGISTRATION FOR THE HONORS PORTFOLIO IS NOT REQUIRED. THERE IS NO HONORS OPTION FOR THE SOCIAL STUDIES COMPONENT OF THE COURSE.American Studies is an interdepartmental offering that integrates/coordinates the study of American literature and history with the development of speaking, research, and writing skills. Students examine significant themes in American history from the Civil War period to the 1980’s using selections from American literature and poetry as well as primary and secondary historical texts. The course meets for the full year, with a double period during one trimester. Debates, formal presentation and oral interpretation of literature are used to develop and evaluate oral communication skills. Students will complete both informal and formal research projects, including a local history investigation. Assessments will be based on analytical and creative writing, project work, quizzes and tests as well as on class participation.
