This course is designed to introduce the argumentative processes of analysis, evidence, reasoning, argument construction and refutation.  Students practice each of these skills in individual and group environments.  Several formats of debate are introduced:  mock trial, philosophical debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, academic cross-examination debate, etc.  Assignments vary, but the course always includes a variety of activities to improve thinking and speaking skills.  The major units in the course include the following concepts:  logical and ethical responsibilities of debate, analysis of propositions, analysis of evidence, researching resolutions, reasoning skills, cross-examination procedures, case construction, refutation strategies, delivery styles, and audience analysis.
