This survey course includes selections of British and Irish Literature from its beginnings in the Middle Ages to the present, with a strong emphasis on the literary diversity of twentieth century. Class readings span several genres: medieval myth and epic, Shakespearean tragedy, comedy and satire, lyric poetry, modern drama, short fiction, and essay. Novels are also included as group readings. In addition to discussing and writing about the literature, students learn about its historical and cultural context and trace the development of the English language.
