This course explores celebrated classic, modern, and contemporary literature of and about Africa (Senegal, Nigeria, and South Africa), India, and the Caribbean.  Students will study a variety of themes, including colonization and its aftermath, particularly the effects of colonial education on identity and language, the power relationships between colonizer and colonized, and the tragic consequences of injustice. In the more contemporary literature, students will learn about postcolonial theory and explore the debates about the use of the English language, the significance of shifting gender roles, and the complexity of multicultural identity. Each unit focuses on a particular region of the world and includes a variety of novels, essays, poems, and film to help students understand common themes in literature across cultures as well as the rich diversity of human experience.
