Contemporary World Literature

Contemporary World Literature 2 Credits
Contemporary World Literature/Honors 2 Credits

Not Offered in 2008-2009

In Contemporary World Literature, students explore significant literary themes and issues which have developed in the last 20 years. In this course, students read fiction, short stories, poetry, plays, nonfiction, and essays that represent a small sampling of the voices of various cultures heard throughout the world today. Reading and writing their way into an analysis of contemporary culture, students will use their previous knowledge grounded in the classics of world literature to discuss themes such as redefinition of the family, obstacles to survival, the complexities of modern relationships, and the universality of human experience. The course focuses on texts by prize-winning contemporary authors such as Jhumpa Lahiri (India), Cristina Garcia (Cuba), Ruth Ozeki and Haruki Muraki (Japan), Yann Martel and Alice Munro (Canada), and Sherman Alexie (Indigenous).
