Music Theory 668B 4 Credits

JUNIORS AND SENIORS (SOPHOMORES BY PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR)

PREREQUISITE: DEMONSTRATED MUSIC READING SKILLS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE INSTRUCTOR

Chords, scales, intervals, composing for one or two voices, ear training, elementary counterpoint and sight singing are the principle content of the first trimester, which builds from simple structures through increasingly complex techniques. In the second trimester, such topics as advanced harmonic structures and techniques, composition, and analysis are considered. Any student considering further music study should take this course. The Advanced Placement Music Theory Exam is available to students who enroll in this class. Students interested in pursuing AP Music should do independent study in music history and advanced harmonic dictation. This is a challenging academic course.
