Experiential Education

2 Credits maximum per academic year

JUNIORS AND SENIORS ONLY

As an alternative to Directed Studies, or in place of electives, some seniors and juniors may choose to develop a plan for community-based experiential education. A senior or junior may be allowed to have a shorter day in school to be able to do a project in the community. Each rising junior or senior who is interested will meet with a guidance counselor to plan his/her experience. With an approved plan a student could leave school early (E period, or D and E periods) to do an internship or other independent learning experience. In addition to the required counselor meeting, students will be required to develop a written contract and have parent approval. It is important for parents to understand that the school is not responsible for supervising students once they leave the school building. Students will be expected to document 60 hours of experience and required to attend one school-based seminar per trimester to supplement their projects. During course registration, seniors may request up to three trimesters of Experiential Education, and either one or two blocks per trimester. Juniors who are in good academic standing may request either one or two blocks of Experiential Education during one trimester only. The first block of Experiential Education, for which a student receives credit, replaces an elective course in the student’s schedule. The second block, if scheduled, can be in place of a directed study.
