Do you know how to balance a checkbook? Manage a credit card? Deal with a product defect? Consumer Economics provides practical knowledge of how our economy works and how you can be a well-informed and skillful participant in that economy. Topics include advertising and wise buying strategies, needs versus wants, how to manage credit and debt, banking and saving, investing and financial planning, taxes, budgets and record keeping, and different perspectives on money and wealth. This course is especially useful to students who will soon leave home for work or school. Course work includes daily homework, quizzes, exercises in money management, and written reflections. Students will be expected to complete a consumer research project using computer and Internet sources.
