Latin I

This course is designed for students in grades 9-12 who wish to understand the essential structures and vocabulary of written Latin. Functional grammar is acquired and basic vocabulary developed to enable students to translate simple written Latin into correct English. Topics in Roman history and life are introduced. Regular review of derivatives and comparative grammar increases the student’s knowledge and understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. Daily written homework is required. Homework will include the translation from Latin to English and English to Latin, as well as the production and use of proper forms. Chapter quizzes are given weekly. Unit tests will cover the material presented in three or four chapters. Class work will include oral vocabulary drill, oral reading of Latin, translation and analysis of grammatical structures. Both individual and group work is emphasized.
Honors Option: Students electing the Latin I honors option will be required to complete additional translation assignments as well as Latin composition exercises.
