High School Hopes to Save After-School Clubs with Voluntary Fees

As a result of the severe school budget cuts slated for the 2009-2010 school year, there will be NO more funding for after-school clubs at Amherst Regional High School. A robust menu of after-school club offerings has been a mainstay at ARHS for many years. Three years ago, the school offered 60 clubs. This year, due to budget cuts, there were only 30. Next year there could be none.

In an effort to maintain this vital offering, ARHS hopes to fund after-school clubs through voluntary fees and donations. The amount collected will determine the number of clubs available. In order to maintain the 30 clubs the school offered this year, approximately $25,000 will need to be raised. A generous donor has offered to provide $5,000 to match the first $5,000 raised through voluntary fees. The money collected will be used to compensate the adults required to be present at every club meeting as well as provide a small stipend for a program coordinator.

Parent/guardians will receive a request for "voluntary student activity fee" for after school clubs as part of the back to school mailing that comes to all families in August.
