Dear ARHS Parents and Guardians,

Yesterday, we received information that an ARHS faculty member, Mr. Ron Garney, was arrested. The charge was possession of child pornography. The arrest did not take place on school grounds.

The school district takes no position on Mr. Garney’s guilt or innocence. However, as per district policy, due to the nature of the allegation, Mr. Garney has been suspended indefinitely from his teaching position, effective immediately.

He has been directed in writing by the superintendent not to have any contact – either direct or electronic – with any ARPS students. As well, he has been directed not to be in any of the ARPS schools or on school property or attend any school-sponsored events.

As of today, the Amherst Police Department investigation has determined that the pornography allegedly in Mr. Garney’s possession did not involve any ARHS students, either past or present. The investigation, however, is on-going.

As well, there was no evidence that would indicate either the production or distribution of pornography. No pornographic materials were found in school among Mr. Garney’s personal and professional materials.

Guidance counselors are available for students if they feel they need for additional support. All ARHS faculty and staff are able to assist students in making a referral to guidance.

Our plan is to have teachers read a condensed version of this letter to all students tomorrow morning in their first period classes.

Again, given the nature of the allegation, rumors will start. However, we have an interest in keeping them to a minimum. So, in general, we would ask all members of the school community to refrain from speculating and spinning tales about this matter.

At the same time, if members of our community have information they believe bears on the police investigation, the police have advised that they be contacted directly. The number of the detective bureau is 259-3015.

Lastly, we will hold a meeting for all parents and guardians on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 pm in high school cafeteria. Dr. Hochman, Chief Sherpa and Mr. J

If you have questions before then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Mark Jackson

Principal
