Message to be read to all ARHS students

on Wednesday, Nov 29

  1. Yesterday, we received information that an ARHS faculty member, Mr. Ron Garney, was arrested. The charge was possession of child pornography. The arrest did not take place on school grounds.

  2. The school district takes no position on Mr. Garney’s guilt or innocence.

However, as per district policy, given the nature of the allegation, Mr. Garney has been suspended indefinitely from his teaching position, effective immediately. He has been directed in writing by the superintendent not to have any contact – either direct or electronic – with any ARPS students. As well, he has been directed not to be in any of the ARPS schools or on school property or attend any school-sponsored events.

  3. Again, given the nature of the allegation, rumors will start. However, we have an interest in keeping them to a minimum. So, in general, we would ask all members of the school community to refrain from speculating and spinning tales about this matter.

At the same time, if members of our community have information they believe bears on the police investigation, the police have advised that we follow this procedure:

Information of this sort should be brought to a guidance counselor or administrator who will be in contact with the Amherst Police Department.

  4. As of today, the Amherst Police Department investigation has determined that the pornography allegedly in Mr. Garney’s possession did not involve any ARHS students, either past or present. The investigation, however, is on-going.

As well, there was no evidence that would indicate either the production or distribution of pornography.

Finally, no pornographic materials were found in school among Mr. Garney’s personal and professional materials.

  5. Guidance counselors are available for students if they feel they need for additional support. All ARHS faculty and staff are able to assist students in making a referral to guidance.

  6. We will hold a meeting for all parents/guardians this evening, Wednesday, November 29,  at 7 pm in HS cafeteria. Dr. Hochman, Chief Sherpa and Mr. Jackson will be available to address the concerns of the community. Please encourage your parents or guardians to attend.
