All ninth graders are required to take this two-part introductory writing and literature course, which may be taken in either order. Students experiment with a variety of personal, analytical, and imaginative compositions, emphasizing the writing process. Fundamentals of grammar and usage, paragraph and essay development, and the responsible use of outside sources for research assignments are introduced and reinforced. Students read a variety of genres selected to acquaint them with examples of great literature from ancient to modern times.

In Writing and Literature A, students read a classical epic, modern drama, autobiography, and poetry. In Writing and Literature B, students read a Shakespearean play, a modern novel, a memoir, and short stories. These works serve as models for students’ own compositions.
