Modern and Contemporary Poetry is a literature course which focuses on the analysis of poetic form and language. The course includes a generous selection of poetry representing the traditional as well as the most recent forms and conventions and an extensive cross-section of perspectives related to gender, ethnicity, and age. The course also encourages students to use a variety of critical lenses to interpret poetry. Among the poets studied are Robert Penn Warren, Elisabeth Bishop, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Adrienne Rich, William Carlos Williams, Gary Soto, and Lucille Clifton. The writing component includes analytical essays, a poetry portfolio of works in progress, and a poetry reader’s journal.
