Engineering offers an opportunity to solve problems and help others in a variety of ways. This class will introduce students to the ways engineers and problem solvers think about problems and potential solutions. The problems worked on are real ones. Students look at the redesign of existing technology to make it useful to a wider range of people (universal design) and design devices that help people overcome a specific problem (assistive technology). Working in engineering teams, students research, design and construct models and prototypes of solutions. Students will: use the engineering design process to draw solutions, use mathematics and scientific principles to verify and test solutions, research appropriate materials, learn how to safely use tools and equipment to build solutions, and orally present solutions and design notebooks to the class. There are opportunities to work with engineering programs at the University of Massachusetts. This is the first of two courses that prepares students for the Technology/Engineering MCAS test option.
