The Amherst School District receives funds through Title I, a federally-funded program that provides additional academic support and learning opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects. Federal regulations allow districts to roll over up to 15% of their annual allocation from one fiscal year to the next and also include a provision allowing districts to request a waiver to roll over a larger percentage if necessary. The Amherst Public Schools has submitted an Ed-Flex waiver to request exception to Section 1127 (20 USC 6338), limiting the amount of Title I funds that can be rolled over from one fiscal year to the next (15% of the entitlement). Our district will use these funds to continue focused efforts on the K-1 literacy program, including analysis of its effect on our most at-risk students, and to continue supporting Title I teachers by improving their development of literacy instruction. Public comments or questions regarding the district’s Title I waiver request are welcome and can be submitted by emailing Dr. Rhonda Cohen or calling 362-1828.
