Professional Development and Evaluation Handbook

September, 2009

Dear Amherst, Amherst-Pelham Regional Schools, and Pelham Colleagues,

Charlotte Danielson states that, “Teacher evaluation has two essential purposes: ensuring teacher quality and promoting teacher learning”. The goal of our evaluation model is to provide a process which will help to ensure teaching of the highest quality, using approaches that encourage reflection, conversation and opportunities for growth.

This document takes the reader from the Professional Teaching Standards to the Professional Growth planning process to Evaluation and Professional Development. Terms and definitions, timelines and templates are provided to give structure, consistency and shared understanding for teachers and evaluators throughout our districts. An Appendix provides samples and resources which can be used to support the evaluation process.

As we work together to foster a culture for professional growth and learning, we believe that every student will benefit from our commitment to excellence and collaborative efforts.

Respectfully,

Tom Fricke, HS Teacher
Michael Morris, Crocker Farm Principal
Mark Moriarty, HS Teacher
Tim Sheehan, Grade 2 Classroom Teacher, Fort River and APEA President
Amy Wolpin, Elementary Math Intervention Teacher, Wildwood
Fran Ziperstein, Director of Curriculum, Evaluation and Professional Development
