A Message from Interim Superintendent Maria Geryk

I deeply appreciate the opportunity to serve the district in the role of Interim Superintendent for the remainder of this school year and during the 2010-2011 school year. While our district has experienced a significant challenge over the past several days, the daily work of our talented teachers has not been interrupted. Our children have benefitted, and will continue to benefit, from their expertise and dedication. Teaching and learning is the core of our mission and will be the focus of the work ahead, and there are several initiatives underway which require immediate attention:

  • Follow up on the Middle School report from Dr. Barry Beers;
  • Continuation of the work with RaDAR regarding the districts’ commitment to social justice;
  • Completion of the Special Education Program review;
  • Reorganization of staff and students throughout the Amherst elementary district;
  • Closure of Mark’s Meadow School;
  • Searches for Director of Curriculum and Assessment, Middle School Principal, Pelham Principal, and two Assistant Principals (HS and MS);
  • Finalization of the FY11 Budgets.

Over the next few days, I will meet with district administrators and staff regarding the above initiatives as well as other work at the schools and district, and will provide an update to the community as we move forward. In addition, I am looking beyond these current, primary initiatives to plan for our summer programming and for the FY11 school year. I am excited about the work already underway and look forward to supporting the students, families and staff of the Amherst, Pelham, and Amherst-Pelham Regional School Districts.

Sincerely,

Maria Geryk
Interim Superintendent of Schools
