Community Shows Support for Backpacks Project

Early in the summer, the district announced the Backpack Project, which was an effort to collect backpacks and school supplies for students who might need them for the upcoming school year.  Through the generosity of individuals, businesses, civic organizations, and faith groups in our communities, the district collected 198 backpacks and the supplies to fill them.  In addition, $800 was received in support of the project and those funds were used to purchase additional backpacks and supplies.

Letters about the Backpack Project were mailed to more than 600 families. As of Wednesday August 25, 180 families had contacted the district to request backpacks, and 218 backpacks have been distributed.  Currently, there are more families who have requested backpacks and supplies than the district can provide.  We will continue to collect donations and will keep a wait list for those requesting the supplies. People may contact Dr. Marta Guevara at guevaram@arps.org or drop supplies off at the superintendent’s office. See the list of supplies that are needed.

Our deepest gratitude to all of the families, friends and community members who have donated to our project and to the following organizations:

The Interfaith Group, representing the many communities of faith in our districts
The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts
The Rotary Club
The Jones Group
The Amherst Club
