Highlights of 2011 Summer Achievement Academy
Summer 2011
-
2011 Summer Achievement Academy was housed at Crocker Farm Elementary, which proved to be an ideal location. Principal Mike Morris and his outstanding support staff were instrumental in making Achievement Academy possible this summer.
-
There were 90 students enrolled from grades 2-5, and attendance was very good.
-
Classes were taught by certified teachers, which made it a powerful and academically-meaningful experience for the students.
-
Three Paraprofessionals provided great support to the teachers and the coordinator. These individuals made a difference to all of the students, but particularly the English Language Learners who needed extra support.
-
Several Tier 2 interventions, such as LLI, The Language of Math, Lexia and Symphony were piloted at Summer Achievement Academy through the support of Beth Graham. The district is appreciative that the software company for these intervention programs provided free access and training.
-
Achievement Academy coordinated closely with the Special Education summer program, which allowed for inclusion and cooperation that made a difference for all children.
-
Through an outstanding collaboration with LSSE, the district was able to provide a summer camp experience for a large number of the students attending the Achievement Academy. LSSE offered income-eligible families a much discounted fee (from 75%-100%) that allowed access to an extended day experience. For many of these students, this was the first time they were able to have a summer experience that included swimming, arts, crafts and other fun summer activities. The district appreciates LSSE Director Linda Chalfant and her staff for making this option available.
-
The Achievement Academy program concluded with a celebration for students and families, who were able to meet the staff, see the classrooms and their children’s work. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the children’s accomplishments and the completion of the program.
