Sammy WhittakerThe annual student-driven fundraiser, ‘Canes for the Cure, is coordinated by the Future Business Leaders of America Club at Amherst Regional High School. Four years ago, FBLA members decided to partner with Cooley Dickinson Hospital and raise money for the cancer treatment center. The students approached local businesses and sold tshirts to the ARHS community to raise money for cancer patients and their families. FBLA has raised an astounding $5,500 for the cancer fund.
FBLA is dedicated to helping the community through service projects like ‘Canes for the Cure or canned food drives which benefit the Amherst Survival Center. These altruistic projects teach members business concepts and skills while raising awareness of organizations and people in need.
Missy Shea, faculty advisor of FBLA, states, “These activities teach students how to run a business using spreadsheets, inventory, marketing and other tools. These skills are vital in life and FBLA provides a unique vehicle for students to learn. The work of FBLA promotes awareness in our community and encourages all to become involved to help those who need assistance. ”
In addition to ‘Canes for the Cure, FBLA hosts the ARHS Staff Recognition Breakfast and is responsible for the school store. FBLA members manage and staff the store each day and provide snacks and school supplies for a small fee.
Michael Stender, ARHS Senior is glad he joined the group as a freshman. “I was not entirely sure what FBLA did; I thought it was just for people interested in business. However, I quickly learned the true meaning of the group and that is ‘helping others’. FBLA has positively impacted my life.”
‘Canes for the Cure T-shirts are available for $10.00 from late January through February 8. Shirts are available from FBLA members and Ms. Shea. FBLA urges students, staff and family members to wear the shirts to athletic contests and other activities.
