Building Construction Facts

The size of the meetinghouse was 46’X 36’. Big hand-cut timbers were used for the construction. Framing for the roof was done like construction in Italy using cambered timbers. Cambered means the timbers were thicker in the middle. Roof boards still survive. Dovetail joints were used to secure tie beams in the roof framing. Mortise and tendon joints were used to connect beams.

The clapboard were put on in a feathered manner. It can still be seen on the north and east walls. A semi-circular pediment was constructed over the door for protection. Windows are still in their original spots except where a porch was later added. In 1743, several things were completed: the three galleries, the framed stairs, floor, and open seating.

Original seats can be seen on the west side of the building.
