From the Principal:

I want to thank the Pelham Arts Lottery Council for providing funding once again for our attendance at the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center performances.  Pelham students are very lucky to have access to such high quality presentations and to such incredibly diverse arts events.  The Council provides funding for student admissions that we would not be able to fund out of the regular school budget.

Parents, I want to let you know that in addition to the runny noses, coughs, cold and flu in the school, two students were diagnosed with Lyme disease over the last three weeks.  Many of the symptoms of Lyme mimic cold and flu symptoms, so it is often difficult to diagnose.  The attached fliers from the Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control will provide more information.  Classrooms are in desperate need of tissues, so please send in a box if you can.  Also, we are increasing the frequency of student hand washing in each class and the cleaning of classroom surfaces  to help cut the germ count.  Please remind your children at home to cover their mouth when they sneeze or cough, to use a tissue when they have a runny nose, and to wash their hands frequently.  Thanks for your help.   Rena Moore

THE PELHAM PTO GENEVIEVE’S  Fundraiser DEADLINE IS TOMORROW   OCTOBER 23rd

Fourth Grade Pelham Press

We are continuing our studies of Native American culture.  People of the Breaking Day, by Marcia Sewell, describes many facets of the historic Wampanoag tribe, detailing their beliefs, social structure, and day to day living. Students are taking notes and making pictures for a small sketch book.  Other students are reading Sign of the Beaver.  It is a tale of a boy who befriends a Native American and learns many useful skills that enable him to survive in the wilderness of Maine.

We have concluded our unit on data analysis.  The culminating project was to design a survey question and ask two classrooms for data.  Students then chose a way to represent both their data sets on one graph for easy comparison.  Our next field of study will be probability.  Students will construct probability lines and determine the likeliness of certain events happening.

We have begun a unit on geography.  Students are learning about natural and human features and identifying landforms and water forms.  Soon we will looking at the different ways to divide North America into regions.

As always, we are writing.  We have finished the writing prompts and have written two reports focusing on Wampanoag culture.  We are taking the revision process seriously, exchanging reports and providing helpful comments to others.

I am looking forward to your conference.

P.S.  We are in need of tissues for the classroom.
