From the Principal:

I enjoyed seeing so many of you at last night’s Curriculum Night.  As I moved from room to room on Wednesday, I enjoyed hearing about all the learning that goes on in the classrooms and seeing the units that teachers will introduce during the year.  It looked like we were very close to our goal of 100% attendance in most of the classrooms, and I know some parents who had conflicts visited the classrooms on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning.  I want to thank all of you for making your child’s education a top priority.  However, I felt that I had been transported to another area of the country when the thermometer in my car said it was 72 degrees at 9:00 PM!                                     Rena Moore

A BETTER CHANCE – FALL FOLIAGE WALK

OCTOBER 13, 2007

The Amherst A Better Chance Fall Foliage Walk will return this year on Saturday, October 13th with all of the fitness fun it has provided for the past 35 years.  A tradition in Amherst, the Walk is the ABC program’s most important fundraiser.  People of all ages and from all parts of the community come out to support the seven scholars who are seeking better educational opportunities at Amherst Regional High School.  The 22 kilometer walk begins at the Mill River Recreation Center from 8-10 a.m. or at Amethyst Brook from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and ends with a mid-afternoon reception at the ABC House at 74 North Prospect Street in downtown Amherst.  The House will be welcoming some alumni back, too.  It’s OK if you don’t do the whole Walk; even if you can’t walk at ALL on that day you CAN still participate by seeking pledges for an alternative activity.  Pledge forms will be available to Pelham students and families from Meg Gallagher after permission slips go home.  To learn more about the A.B.C. Program, go to amherstabetterchance.org or to the national website, abetterchance.org.

Kindergarten News

As we start this new month of October our classroom is coming together as a community:  working together to make sure that everyone feels comfortable, knowing what the rules of the classroom are, and beginning the learning of new and exciting knowledge. I am proud of the way the children are helping each other, being there for a friend in need, and remembering the respect that is so important within any community.

Our letter of the week has begun with some exciting things being brought in. This activity allows us to be responsible for homework, and helps us with the letter/sound relationship of the letter. This is one of the strategies needed for beginning reading skills. The children were very interested in ‘rainbows’ during “r” week.  We spent time learning the colors of the rainbow and studied the scientific reason for rainbows appearing in the sky.

The first math investigations unit is called “Who Is in School Today?”  The main focus of this unit is to develop a mathematical community.  We first look at the materials that we will be using all year long, learning the use and care of these materials.  These materials will help us develop language to describe attributes, quantity, and position. It also introduces routines common to many Kindergarten classrooms that will be used throughout the year.

The children and I were glad for you to see our classroom at Wednesday’s Open House. We worked very hard getting things ready for you.  Our classroom is really feeling like ours now.  What a great start to our year!                            Debbie Jacque
