Parent Connection

The children have really gotten into the swing of 2nd grade. We accomplishing a lot. The children have taken assessments in spelling and math. I have had an opportunity to listen to everyone read which will help me determine the proper reading materials once we begin reading groups. We still have writing and reading assessments that we’ll finish up in the next few weeks.

Social Studies  Along with our unit on friends, we have discussed that everyone has certain needs such as the need for physical well being, for honesty and respect, the need to belong and to feel safe, and the need for joy and play. We talked about how people react when they don’t get their needs met. Sometimes we find positive ways to meet their needs and sometimes we do things that are not positive.  We have read several stories about children who have had a problem and talked about the ways they chose to solve their problem.  During the school year we will continue to reflect on these as difficulties arise so that we can learn more about how we react and how we can help someone who is not getting a need met.

Science:  Last week we designed our experiments. Today we tested our question and recorded our data. We will continue to test tomorrow and Wednesday we will write up our results and conclusions.

Bubble Extravaganza- This is our special ending to our bubble study. Our day has changed to Thursday at 1:15.  The children will move to different stations every 15 minutes. If you wish to come and help please let me know.

Math:  Throughout the year I will send home some letters that inform you about our math units.  Today you have the first letter attached. The children have been practicing how to make different combinations for a number. We have also worked on different ways to count items i.e. one to one, by twos, by fives and tens. This week we will look at coins and begin counting money.
