Greenwich
The Town of Greenwich was one of the four towns that got flooded in the making of the Quabbin. This is history leading up to the flooding of the Greenwich. In 1744 the first church in Swift River Valley was erected in Greenwich plains. Then, in 1745 a saw and grist mill were built in Greenwich by a man named Holmes. Next, in 1754 Greenwich was incorporated and the first ever town meeting was held. In 1810 the Greenwich post office opened. Fourteen years later another post office opened called Greenwich Village post office. Later in 1830 Greenwich’s population was 813. Many years later in 1900 Greenwich’s population lowered to 491 . In 1904 Greenwich’s 150th anniversary was celebrated. Then in 12 years the population again lowered to 399. Finally, the population hits rock bottom - 219 in 1935. Later that year the Greenwich Church foundation is established. One year later, Enfield, Greenwich, Dana and Prescott were dis-incorporated. A farewell party is held in Enfield Town Hall. That is the epic history of Greenwich.
