First Day Celebration Planned for September 1

The First Day Celebration is scheduled for Thursday, September 1 onthe Amherst Town Common from 5:30-7pm. Families, teachers and communityleaders will gather in a unified show of support for the Amherst-PelhamRegional Public Schools.

Superintendent of Schools, Maria Geryk, invites all families toattend this event. “The First Day Celebration is a wonderful communitytradition. It celebrates the people and programs which make our schoolsso great. The sole purpose of this event is to foster community spiritand demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to the education of ourstudents.”    

Kimberly Stender, Volunteer Coordinator, states “All families areencouraged to bring a picnic dinner from a local eatery and enjoy ponyrides, musical performances, police and fire demonstrations and more! The Amherst Lions Club will conduct free vision screenings for adultsand children. College students, athletes and mascots will greet guestsand organize games and crafts.  All activities are free of charge.”

Free parking and shuttle bus service is available at Amherst RegionalHigh School beginning at 5:15pm.  In the event of rain, the First DayCelebration will take place at Amherst Regional High School.

“This year many groups in the Human Services Network will be on handto educate the public about health and safety programs.” Stender adds,“We are partnering with the Amherst Survival Center in a concentratedeffort to support their “Foundation Initiative: Underwear & Dignityfor All”.  The ACS is in need of 10,000 pair of NEW underwear for men,women and children. Please consider donating these items to the ASC.Volunteers will collect these items at the event.”
